Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) is an ancient practice that has been used to treat animals almost as long as it has been used to improve the health of humans.

It consists of five branches:

  • Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine (TCHM)
  • Acupuncture
  • Tui-na (Chinese massage)
  • Chinese Food Therapy
  • Lifestyle

TCHM is based on ancient medicinal practices that rely on herbs and minerals to correct imbalances in the body that lead to disease. This contrasts with most Western medicines which seek to stop the disease or control the symptoms without correcting the underlying cause. As an integrative practice, we combine this knowledge along with more modern diagnostics such as lab work to better understand your pet’s condition and treat accordingly.

Most often used in conjunction with other therapies such as acupuncture (another branch of TCVM), herbal medicine can assist in treating the same health issues, which include:

  • Musculoskeletal disorders
  • Arthritis/joint disease
  • Hip dysplasia
  • Post-operative rehab
  • Nerve injuries/paralysis
  • Skin Problems
  • Allergies
  • Gastrointestinal problems

TCHM is tailored to each pet, based on a full-body Chinese medical examination that includes tongue and pulse evaluation. Formulas are given orally as a powder, in tea, pill or capsule form. Chinese Food Therapy is a large part of healing with TCHM, so this will often be discussed as we implement a treatment plan.
