Leptospirosis Outbreak: Vaccinate Your Dogs

Leptospirosis cases are on the rise in our area. Leptospirosis is a highly contagious zoonotic disease, meaning it can easily pass from animals to humans and vice versa. It’s transmitted most commonly through urine and contaminated water.

Keep an eye out for the following symptoms:

  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Weakness
  • Tremors and/or shaking
  • Fever

If your pet shows any of these signs, especially after spending time around standing water and/or other dogs, bring them to Circle L Animal Hospital.

This outbreak poses a threat to humans and animals alike, so we highly recommend getting your dog vaccinated as soon as you can, especially if your dog is around standing water, streams, other dogs and/or wildlife regularly. It is a series of two vaccines and we have increased our stock so we have plenty for all of our dog patients.

    Vaccine Titer Testing

Vaccine titer testing provides a natural approach to vaccinations. While vaccines are crucial for protecting your pet, sometimes side effects can occur if they are given too frequently.

Vaccine titer testing allows your Circle L veterinarian to check the efficacy of your pet’s last vaccine. With this testing, we can see if a previously administered vaccine is still working to protect your pet.

Titers measure antibodies found in the blood. So, with titer testing, we can accurately determine if your pet has enough antibodies to protect against specific diseases. A high count means your pet is adequately protected and does not need further vaccination at that time. A low count means your pet probably needs to be revaccinated to be fully protected against that disease.

Titer tests can be used to prove immunity against parvovirus, distemper and adenovirus. However, since rabies vaccines are required by law, your pet will always need to have a current rabies vaccine, regardless of titer test results.

Titer testing helps you make fully informed decisions regarding your pet’s care, and we’re proud to provide this progressive option to you at Circle L Animal Hospital.
